„Construindo Vidas – Building Lives in Guinea-Bissau”
Help give one of the poorest countries in Africa a chance for education, sports, and a dignified future!
From kindergarten to graduation
With Hungarian support, nearly 500 students can graduate from the school each year.
Selfless help where it is truly needed
Comprehensive Support - Food, Education, Faith
We lay the foundation for their future - Writing, reading, sports

Guinea-Bissau is one of the poorest and most underdeveloped countries on Earth. A place where more than half of the population over the age of 15 is completely illiterate and cannot read or write.

The proportion of Christians within the population is only about 101%, while more than 16-20 different tribes live side by side, often with deep tensions and walls.

In the absence of suitable alternatives, young people left alone are directly threatened by the world of crime, drug trafficking and child prostitution. In many families, the struggle to simply survive forces parents to start working at an early age or to place their children in vulnerable situations.

Foundation response

Bethel and Campaz School

A Bethel and Campaz School It functions as a kind of bridge between children from different tribes, helping them to live together peacefully. Currently, there are a total of 950 students attend our institutions from kindergarten to high school graduation. Of these, in the last school year Complete training of 454 students We were able to finance it from direct Hungarian and international donations, ensuring that poverty was not an obstacle to learning.

Canteen
Guaranteed one hot meal

After international food programs were shut down, our supporters helped restart the school cafeteria. This includes children from kindergarten to 6th grade. Provides 525 children with one nutritious, hot meal a day, which is for many the only sure meal of the day.

Library

Sustainable infrastructure: We not only maintain classrooms on site:

It works on Cherno Camara Library, where students and teachers can access knowledge

Dormitory and clean drinking water

We provide a A dormitory with 40 beds (Student House) especially for young people who come from remote villages.

A filtered water facility established with donations and collaboration from Hungary we drilled wells in Cacine and the surrounding region, so families don't have to drink contaminated water or walk 10 kilometers for drinking water even during the dry season.

The student became a teacher in Cacinéa

„Ludmilla was one of the girls to whom the Bethel community gave a chance to study. Her goal is to finish school and build a beautiful future for herself, so that she can support her family later. With the support, she was able to finish school and not only learned to read and write in a country where many women do not have the opportunity to do so, but after graduating from high school, she also participated in pedagogical training. Today, she is once again a member of the Zecote kindergarten and community, but now works as a teacher educating the youngest children and passing on the knowledge, hope and faith that once helped her get started.”

Who went from first grade to university

„I will never forget Bethel School – this institution gave me a solid foundation, I even learned the letter 'A' here. When I was a child, washing clothes with my mother at the port, one of the foundation’s supporters noticed me. He brought us food and immediately made arrangements with the school principal, because I couldn’t go to school until then, I had to help my father at home. Thanks to the support, I completed 12 grades and am now studying sociology at the best university in the country (Colinas de Boe). I work in a carpentry workshop on weekends, but on weekdays I get up at 4 am to study. My dream is to return to Cacine after graduation and teach at Bethel School to uplift my people.”

The first doctor from Cacine

„Valberto, named after the founder of the Bethel School, rose from poverty in Cacine to become a doctor. Thanks to the school’s teachers and supporters in Hungary, he not only received the help he needed for his studies, but also support and mentorship throughout his educational journey. As a result of his diligence and perseverance, he successfully graduated from high school, earned a degree in Brazil, and now works as a doctor in the United States. His story is an inspiring example of how even the biggest dreams can be achieved from Cacine.”

Cherno Camara

Who gave a name to knowledge

„"Chief Cherno Camará welcomed the missionary Valberto who arrived here and provided him with significant support for the construction of the school: he provided land, and also assisted his work with his advice and encouragement. In honor of his memory and respect, the Cherno Camará Library, located on the grounds of the Bethel School, was named after him. Today, the library is the only place in the region where hundreds of students have access to textbooks, encyclopedias and a peaceful learning environment. The legacy of the elderly chief continues to inspire young people, encouraging them to learn and acquire knowledge.""

A chance to make a living

In foundation schools, students not only acquire basic literacy skills, but also learn to study independently, research, and navigate the information of the modern world.

In addition to Portuguese, the institutions also emphasize the teaching of English and French, making it much easier for graduates to succeed in neighboring African countries or on the international labor market.

The foundation maintains a separate IT department and a room equipped with 25 computers, where students learn digital literacy, basic software management, and internet searching.

After graduating from high school (12th grade), the foundation's staff provides personalized mentoring to help the most talented young people with their university or college application processes.

The foundation not only relieves students of administrative burdens, but also provides the financial support for higher education through direct scholarships or tuition reimbursement.

For graduates who return to Cacine after graduation, the foundation offers a secure career path and local employment as a teacher, coordinator or administrator.

The educational program pays special attention to preparing students for practical life, so students learn official administration, CV writing, and the basic moral and professional values expected in the labor market.

Within the framework of vocational training programs, young people can learn carpentry, masonry, or even sewing locally, which represent an immediate, tangible source of income in the Tombali region.

Many of the young people who graduated from foundation schools are now working successfully as recognized lawyers, doctors, or teachers in the capital (Bissau) or abroad, such as in Portugal and Brazil.

The presence and regular visits of former students who have gone on to successful careers provide a huge, tangible motivation and vision for the generation currently studying there, who come from deep poverty.

The Sewing Project: Our sewing courses for local girls and women provide participants with a tangible profession. Sewing education is a real breakthrough opportunity: by learning hand and machine sewing, young girls can stand on their own two feet, protecting themselves from vulnerability and forced marriages.

Decade-long commitment

Our mission is not a temporary project

Our local partner and leader José Valberto Teixeira Oliveira has been building the community in the Cacine area since 1995, and the Foundation for Education in Guinea-Bissau has been providing a stable background from Hungary since 2008.

The current goal

The sports hall is our magnet: it attracts young people from the streets with the joy of play, so that they can have a chance at school and faith, purpose, and vision in our community.

The Sports Hall

(Cacine Sports Hall)

The construction of the sports hall is the largest sports and community investment in the history of the Tombali region, opening a completely new dimension in the quality of life of local young people.

Phase I - 2025 completed

Milestones – How Phase 1 was completed

Weather constraints: Since this type of work can only be done during the dry season, we had to adapt everything to this period.

Fall 2024 – Preparations: We have successfully marked out the area and begun the first cleanup work.

Spring 2025 – Implementation: We cut down the trees, a local contractor led by our volunteer completed the landscaping, leveling the ground, and digging the foundations. The concreting was completed with local and Hungarian volunteer teams.

Past challenges we have faced:
The earthmoving equipment represented last century technology and arrived at the site from a nearby city (6-7 hours away). Procuring construction materials (gravel, cement) was extremely difficult, as they also required a 6-7 hour journey.

Total expenditure of phase 1 is ~45,700,000 HUF.
Successfully completed the preparations for the 3,000 m² area and the 26 massive concrete pile foundations supporting the frame of the hall.

We are grateful that this first phase was made possible entirely thanks to the support of generous Hungarian donors!

Phase II - 2026 What we need your help with

We are currently collecting funds for this phase of work! Our goal is to complete the entire frame of the hall and the roof sheeting.

Way of purchase and delivery:

We order the complete frame of the hall from the Belgian company Frisomat, who will pack the structural elements into 2 large containers and send them on their way.

The shipment arrives by sea at the port of Bissau, where, after the customs clearance process, it is transported by trucks to Cacine.

Once everything arrives at the site, we will set up the hall with the joint efforts of our Hungarian volunteers and local entrepreneurs.

Why did we choose this technology?

  • Designed specifically for African conditions: The manufacturer manufactures steel structures specifically adapted to local weather conditions, with special surface treatment and use of materials.
  • Long-term solution: We want the building to serve the local community for decades without requiring ongoing and expensive maintenance.
  • Protection from the elements: If we were to build with local iron materials and weld them on site, the salty, coastal air would completely corrode the structure within 5-10 years. With this professional solution, however, we create a timeless and safe venue for community and sports life.

In order for that to happen ordering steel structures, sea and land transportation, customs clearance, as well as the construction and roofing be fully realized, We need 120,000,000 HUF.

Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to putting the hall structure in place and building a durable, safe community space for locals.

Thank you for your support in helping us reach this milestone!

Phase III: Full functionality and finishing touches

The structure and roof completed in Phase 2 will be a huge milestone, but in order for the sports hall to operate in its full function and serve all needs, a final, finishing phase will be necessary.

What will be achieved in this phase?

  • Stand design: We create a safe and comfortable place for spectators and fans.
  • Construction of service rooms: Changing rooms, washrooms and toilets, a medical room, and a storage room will be built.
  • Arranging the playing field and environment: Concrete paving of a surface suitable for sports and construction of sidewalks around the building for safe traffic.
  • Finishing works: Complete plumbing and electrical installation, painting, and finishing touches.

Costs and future collection:

Detailed calculations for this phase are currently still in progress.

Based on preliminary estimates, similarly to phase 2, in terms of magnitude 120,000,000 HUF We will need a sum for the complete turnkey completion.

We will organize a separate collection for this stage later, but we trust that we can count on your support on this journey in the future!

The „Magnet Principle”

Sports and Gospel hand in hand

Compulsory education

The sports hall is not just a luxurious leisure space, but a strategic tool for education. Regular school attendance is a prerequisite for joining a sports club and training. Anyone who wants to play sports must also study!

Values and acceptance

Children can hear the message of the gospel and God's love during training and everyday life, but the Christian religion is not forced on them. Anyone can keep their own family faith, and no one is discriminated against or ostracized because of their background.

Equality and dignity

Mandatory uniforms in schools completely eliminate tribal or wealth differences. We pay special attention to the equality of men and women: girls can play sports, study and create in the same way, making them aware that women are not secondary creatures, but valuable, equal members of society.

„"Be You is also part of the story!

Not a faceless foundation

With your donation, you are not referring to a faceless foundation: you are directly impacting the everyday lives and journeys of real, flesh-and-blood children.

Closed support group

After your support, you will be included in our closed group of supporters and will receive regular newsletters about the progress of the construction, with photos and videos. This is a community of supporters who will be informed first-hand about the students' academic and sports successes.

100% transparency

We strictly account for the fate of every forint. Our public benefit reports and accounts are publicly available for anyone to download from our website.

Morton's travel
As tour operators, we see every day how wonderful and diverse our world is, but also how much we need to come together. The work of the Guinea-Bissau Education Foundation is extremely close to our hearts because it builds a more livable tomorrow in a transparent way, right at the basics – through educating and supporting children. We are honored to be part of this mission.
Maklár Law Firm
We have known the president of the Foundation for Education in Guinea-Bissau for a long time, and therefore we fully support their dedicated work, with which they selflessly help the lives of disadvantaged people on the other side of the world and make educational opportunities available that previously seemed inaccessible. Our law firm is proud to provide legal support for the operation of the foundation and the achievement of its goals.

I would like to bring to your attention a very important matter for us. Elektrocentrum Kft. is made up of believing, Christian people. Since the establishment of our company, we have been committed to supporting those who need help. Over the years, we have helped orphans, refugees, the homeless, disadvantaged families, and refugees arriving in Transcarpathia from the war in Ukraine. We were also there to provide assistance after the earthquake in Turkey. We are particularly close to supporting a Christian foundation school in Caccine, a small town in Guinea-Bissau, a West African country, which we have been helping for 10 years. We are now working on realizing a big dream of theirs: the construction of a sports hall. We started the construction more than a year ago, the foundation is already complete, but further support is needed to continue. For the young people there, sport can mean not only a healthier and more disciplined life, but also a real opportunity to break out in an environment where there are few job opportunities and a vision for the future. We believe that every help counts. I would like to conclude with an old wisdom: „He who supports the poor lends to God.” I trust that this charity will be returned many times over. Thank you for reading my letter, and I wish you and your business a successful year! Lajos Pere Founder Senior Managing Director of Elektrocentrum Kft.

Anna Szijártó
The Department of Building Materials and Building Construction of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics is pleased and proud to support the implementation of the sports hall being built in Guinea-Bissau as a professional partner. Anna (Panka) Szijártó, a concrete technologist, contributed to the strengthening of the technical and scientific background of the project and the success of the development, and in February 2026, she personally participated in the on-site foundation works. A scientific publication is also being prepared on the experiences gained and the tests carried out, written jointly with her colleague Rita Nemes, with the aim of making the initiative known in international professional circles and reaching companies, organizations and supporters who can contribute to the development of the educational and community infrastructure of the region in the long term. The project shows an example of how engineering knowledge, scientific research and social responsibility can be connected in the interest of a cause serving the future of a community. We hope that this cooperation will continue in the future, and that we can continue to contribute to the development of the project with the professional knowledge of our department. For us, this initiative is not just an engineering task, but also a matter of the heart, as we believe that supporting quality education and transferring knowledge cannot stop within the walls of the university, but is our shared responsibility in any community around the world.

Africa has always been in our hearts. I wanted to express my love for those there, to do something for them. I personally have not had the opportunity to do this, but when I got to know the mission work of the Guinea-Bissau Education Foundation, I found in them the heart and activity that I felt and longed for, only here in an even more intense, organized form. Seeing the tireless work and enthusiasm of the Foundation and its supporters, and their latest ambitious plan to build the Stadium, I thank God that our small support can perhaps contribute as much to the spread of God's good news in Africa as if we were there in person. God bless your work!

As a believer, giving is an important thing, but it is difficult to decide who to give to. I see the Zaláns' project as important because they work in an area where God is visibly working. I cannot devote my time to this, but God is also calling us to help bring the good news of Christ to the world. They have now embarked on a major project, which is a great step forward in working together with local youth. If you can, you can support children with their school fees, or the construction of the sports hall. It often helps if you pass it on to people who can support you with a larger amount. However, what is available to everyone is the power of prayer.
John Mezo
My friends! I am János Mező, editor-in-chief of the magazine Motorrevü. Due to my work, I have participated in the Budapest-Bamako Rally several times. In 2012, the rally was in Guinea-Bissau for the first time, and there I met Albert Zalán, a young Hungarian man living and working in the jungle, in the village of Cacine, under the guidance of Valberto, a Brazilian-founded mission. Zalán helped the rally organizers with his local knowledge and experience. We soon became friends, and after the rally had finished, Zalán showed them the work they had done in Cacine. At that time, the school founded and built by the mission had already been operating in the village for years, and one of its classrooms was built thanks to Zalán's work and supporters. At that time, the mission was working on establishing a radio station and transmitter, through which it could share hygiene and health information with the local population. The mission's operation was made possible entirely by the financial and spiritual support of the believing community. After learning about the work of Zalán and his siblings, my partner and I "adopted" a child each, and we have been covering the costs of their education ever since. When I arrived home, I told my friends and colleagues about Zalán's work, and since then, several of them have also been supporting the well-being of a child in Cacine. We believe that every penny we spent went to a good place, because we helped educate children who would not have had a chance to study without this support. We encourage all of our compassionate compatriots, you, to support the mission's operation according to your means. You can change the fate of children living in hopeless circumstances and make the world a better place with a little selflessness. With friendly greetings, János Mező from Budapest
